Jurassic Coast: From the Sea
I am very lucky to call Dorset and the Jurassic Coast home and I love to explore as much as possible, when I get the chance.
One of my bucket list items is to do the Jurassic RIB Ride, which takes you out on a RIB from Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door and back.

You board the RIB from a jetty on Lulworth Beach, from where you are taken westwards along this astonishing stretch of Coastline, where you see 185 million years of history in the rocks.

The journey starts as a calm and sedate exit from Lulworth Cove itself, before opening up the engines when you are in open sea, passing sights such as Stair Hole, an embryo cove representing the sea’s first breach of the Portland Limestone and on to Man O’War and St. Oswalds Bay, which have just featured on the new Project Hail Mary film.

Just past the next headland, the famous geological landmark of Durdle Door with its breathtaking 160ft limestone arch, comes in to sight.

From the sea, you can really see why they call it the “Drinking Dragon”.

The RIB stays here for around 5 minutes, gradually taking you around this magnificent arch, so you can see it from every angle. At one point I thought we might actually go through it as we got really close, but whilst it might be possible with a kayak or a paddle board the RIB was too large.

It is then time to head back and the ride back was even faster and more exhilarating, hurtling past the cliffs and heading farther out to sea and back again.

The RIB ride takes around 20 minutes and runs every 30 minutes, with tickets available at the hut on the beach. They are open from April until October, but I would recommend checking their instagram or facebook pages to check that they are operating before you set off, as they may close during bad weather or sea conditions.

In the summer months, you may get to see dolphins or seals, but sadly they didn’t come out to play today.
