Valentine’s Day is one of the few celebration days that is held on the same day every year, 14th February.

It is a day when lovers express their affection with greetings and gifts and although it has origins as far back as the Roman times, it became celebrated as a day of romance since the 14th Century.

I have been with my husband for 20+ years now and gone are the days of secretly sending a card, buying a cute cuddly toy and doing battle in with other couples to get a good table in the local restaurant.

This year we are off to the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton to see The Full Monty, which is probably more for my benefit than for that of my husband, but it got me thinking of other alternatives for the man in your life.

If you are keen to treat the pair of you to something special, nothing can beat a romantic weekend hideaway, somewhere away from the beaten track and with a hot tub to relax in as you stargaze at the night sky, or perhaps a spa treat, where you can both be pampered with a variety of exotic treatments.

Hang Gliding Lesson

This is perhaps my husband’s favourite gift from me – the chance to try free flying – no engine, no noise, just the whistle of the wind in your face and a clear calm perspective on the world below you.

You can choose between a series of Hang Gliding lessons, or just a one-off tandem experience, where you are safely enclosed in a snug-fitting harness, and your BHPA instructor will be controlling the hang glider at all times.

Power Boat Experience

If water is more his thing, why not release his inner Bond and relive an action movie favourite with a chase on water, where powerboats and speedboats weave along the water and frequently jump across each other’s’ wake as the wind their way across the wave.

It is certainly an experience like no other and is not for the faint hearted.
