The UK is filled with them too with around 2,500 located here. The themes of many of them vary, so you can be sure you’ll find one that piques your and your family’s interests. 

If you’re fortunate enough to be one of the almost 5.5 million people who reside in Yorkshire, you’ll have access to countless fantastic museums on your doorstep. These tend to have easy access to good road networks and plenty of public transport options available.

National Coal Mining Museum, Wakefield 

This 45-acre site lets you explore the hidden world of mining. Here you can experience life in the mines with two former working facilities to discover and staff members will explain how coal was extracted back in the day. 

On weekends and during holidays, the battery-powered Paddy Train from Caphouse to Hope is open, so you can see how the minors used to get from pit to pit.  

Danum Gallery, Doncaster

Uncover this city’s rich history at the wonderful museum that was once the Doncaster High School for Girls. The museum can be found in the heart of the city centre, so you can easily board trains to Doncaster to get here

Upon arrival, you’ll have access to a central children’s library that’s perfect for story time and playing games, a museum about Doncaster’s history and a gallery that features breathtaking pieces of art to look at.

Abbey House Museum, Leeds 

The Victorian era is one filled with fascinating discoveries that history buffs are sure to love and the Abbey House Museum in Leeds has plenty of great features. Here you can explore the social history and childhood in Victorian-era Leeds with the family and you’ll find authentically recreated houses, pubs, and shops. 

You’ll also find the largest collection of working penny slot machines here, which is fascinating for all to see. 

National Railway Museum 

Train museums are some of the most popular in the UK and Yorkshire happens to be home to one of the best. The National Railway Museum offers fun for the whole family as you can explore more than 300 years of railway history while looking at popular trains from over the years. 

What’s more, kids can ride a miniature railway for a great experience that they’re sure to remember for many years to come.

It’s always a challenge to find activities that are both educational and engaging for the whole family, and museums are a great way to blend learning with fun. Yorkshire seems to have a rich selection to choose from. I’m particularly interested in visiting the one that focuses on interactive exhibits for children.
