On the bucket list – Visiting Thailand
In the next of my bucket list posts I have chosen Thailand as the place I dream of visiting as many of my friends have been and raved about the stunning beaches, beautiful temples, bustling cities and vibrant night life.
I am a sucker for the beach and the islands off the coast of Thailand are famous throughout the world for their beautiful beaches and gorgeous scenery. Ko Phi Phi is top of my list as it was made famous by the movie “The Beach” and I would love to brush up my scuba diving skills at Ko Tao which is Thailand’s diving mecca.
Thailand’s capital city, Bangkok, is a buzzing city of high-rise buildings, magnificent palaces, ancient temples, glittering nightclubs, bustling markets and streets lined with vendors hawking souvenirs and tantalizing foods. Some of the city can be described as a concrete jungle, jam-packed with noisy traffic and air pollution, however Bangkok is not without its natural beauty that can be seen in its remaining canals, green spaces, flowering tropical plants and numerous golf courses which can be seen here at Golfscape. The famous tourist street, Khao San Road, is a good place to begin with its cheap shopping, dining and nightlife and the sacred Wat Phra Kaew temple, which contains the Emerald Buddha, is not to be missed.
If the buzz of a city appeals but Bangkok is too full on for you, the northern city of Chang Mai is much more relaxed as it has a much smaller population. There are many activities to keep you occupied including adrenalin activities such as caving, tree top zipping, abseiling, para-gliding, dune-buggy riding, as well as a night zoo safari, Tiger Kingdom and royal temples.
If you are familiar with my blog you will know that my husband is fascinated by WWII and we have recently visited Normandy and some of the sites that made history during that era. I would love to take him to see Kanchanaburi which is best known for the Bridge over the River Kwai which is linked with the historic Death Railway to Burma in which thousands of Asian labourers and POWS died during its construction under Japanese occupation during WWII. He would love to visit the many museums and war cemeteries to find out more information about the city and its bridge during the 1940’s Japanese occupation.
Just outside of Kanchanaburi are several national parks, including Erawan and Srinakarind National Parks, which offer beautiful scenery, waterfalls and caves.
For me, I would love to visit one of Thailand’s most beautiful wildlife reserves, the Khao Sok National Park which covers jungle forests, limestone karsts, rivers and lakes in the Surat Thani province. The reserve is home to wildlife such as Asian elephants, deer, wild boar, Malayan tapirs, Bears and various monkeys breeds. There are many trails in the park where visitors can go elephant trekking through the jungle to discover the wildlife and beautiful waterfalls, swim in natural pools and admire stunning vistas from on high.
Have you visited Thailand – what is top of your places to visit?

That waterfall picture!!! Wow! Imagine being there and seeing the scenes for real in some of these photo’s! Amazing. My wife loves Elephants too, so a ride on one would definitely get me some brownie points! 🙂

I’ve been to Thailand twice – once while backpacking with my now husband, and once in a girls’ holiday with a friend … They were very different experiences! You can spend as little or as much as you’d like there, and have an amazing time either way. My favourite place is Ko Tao and I’d recommend staying at the quieter end of the island.

Sounds like such a wonderful place to visit – your pics are breathtaking. Hopefully we will get to visit places like this some day. With our budget and two children 3 and under it’s not practical atm. Looks gorgeous.

Yes, been to Thailand, once for work and the other to relax in Ko Tao beach too. I’m biased, since I’m from the Philippines, I’d say we have better beaches in Palawan 😉 Would love to go back to Thailand this time with my husband and daughter. Hopefully soon! 🙂

The scenery and the colours are just absolutely mesmerising, ive never been to Thailand and have to admit I have never thought of going x

Great post! I will say though, Bangkok is slightly too sleazy for my liking and I would highly recommend Chiang Mai, and do the mountain trek if you don’t mind sleeping in the “wild” with the natives! It’s such an experience!! Or just stay in Chiang Mai, which offers loads to see anyway!

I’ve filmed a WW2 history documentary at Kanchanaburi. The graveyard is soul destroying. It’s like a punch in the gut. There’s a wonderful museum run by an Australian whose father was on the railway. I do hope you make it there.

I think Thailand is great! It’s a very popular destination and some places can be pretty crowded but if you get off the beaten path, you can find beautiful places with almost no people. Koh Ton Say is a fantastic place, I love the combination of crazy cliffs, awesome beaches and hippie atmosphere. 🙂
Cheers,
Miguel.

Hey Kara, thanks for your article on Thailand, as Covid passes, I really hope you get the chance to visit soon! You mention diving on Koh Tao and then going to Phi Phi, but did you know that the diving in the Andaman Sea is much better than the Gulf of Thailand around Koh Tao? Phi Phi is well known for being a party island, however if you’re looking for somewhere a little more laid back and less developed, did you consider Koh Lanta? Koh Lanta is actually quite close to Phi Phi and is a fantastic base for diving in the south of Thailand, You can easily reach all of the Phi Phi dive sites by speedboat from Koh Lanta in just 40 minutes, but also have many island and dive sites in the Lanta marine park, including Koh Haa, Koh Rok, and the world famous Hin Daeng & Hin Muang. Once travelling becomes easier, I really hope you have the chance to get to Thailand, and also hope you can make it to Koh Lanta for some of the best diving in Thailand!
