Review: Axeology Southampton

As the kids get older, trying to find activities that they can all engage with, can be tricky.

We were invited to try out Axeology, an urban axe throwing venue in Southampton city centre.

As cubs / scouts, the kids have tried tomahawk throwing before, but never against us adults so the competitiveness was palpable from the off.

The sessions are instructor led and their coaches (or “Axeologists”) guide you through the process, teaching you everything from the proper grip and stance to the perfect follow-through.

They cater for groups of 2 to 16 and have six lanes. It was fairly quiet when we visited, so split ourselves across two lanes, which ended up as girls vs boys.

Each session lasts 60 minutes, which gives you enough time to learn and perfect the technique. How I managed to hit the bullseye on my first attempt I don’t know!

Once you are hitting that board, you are then given some fun challenges to try, which really raises the competitiveness.

For the first one, we were given sheets to record our scores, with who scores the highest winning. The numbers are written on the targets, but if you hit the tricky green or blue dots, your score 7.

I am pretty sure there was some cheating going on in the boys team, so we did have to adjudicate some of the throws.

As Sebby was the youngest, he was given double throws but by the end of the session, he was hitting the board as well as the rest of us.

For the final challenge, you had to split the apple, which was hung over the board by a piece of string.

I am not one to gloat, but I am very proud to say I won this challenge on my second axe, which a perfect split!!!

The age range of our group was from age 10 and up and we all had a brilliant time honing our skills and trying to out-do each other.

I was the winner of the apple challenge, whilst Isaac was the overall winner with the highest score, just proving that the younger members of the group had as much chance – also possibly because of his scouting experience (I am not bitter as a very close 2nd place).

Axology also offer birthday parties, an axe club if you really want to hone your skills and an outdoor private hire mobile set up.

Each 60 minute session costs £22 per person, with discounts available for groups of 8 or more. Find out more at https://axeology.co.uk/

Are we nearly there yet? is a new online blog run by me, Kara Guppy, and is named as such thanks to my daughter Eliza who always asks that very question when we are less than 5 minutes up the road heading off on our adventures. You may know me from my other family blog chelseamamma.co.uk
