Giving your teen a summer of fun with NCS
Have you got a Year 11 currently stressing over exams?
Why not give them something to look forward to this summer.
Being the proud owner of teenagers (and older), I am all too aware of how worried you can get when they start to head into the big wide world, but I also know the value of ensuring they are equipped with the essential skills they need to be able to look after themselves.
Now you can give them a head start by signing up to the National Citizen Service (NCS) which not only gives your teens the chance to join their peers for outdoor team-building exercises, but it also offers a residential for participants to learn essential ‘life skills’.
For just £50, your teen can enjoy a once in a lifetime experience this summer where they will have fun whilst building their confidence, making new friends and learning life skills that can’t be taught in a classroom, for two to four weeks. This cost includes food, accommodation and travel costs.
The NCS experience is made up of four phases:
Phase 1 – Adventure
A five-day, four-night residential based away from home with fun activities such as canoeing, rock climbing and abseiling, depending where in the country you are based, plus the chance to meet new people and enjoy some adventure, fun and freedom!
Phase 2 – Discovery
A further 5 days and four nights in a university style environment where your teen will develop life skills like confidence, leadership and communication to boost their CV or UCAS personal statement.
Phase 3 – Action
Working in teams, your teens put their new skills into practice by delivering a community project of their choice. Plan, fundraise, make a difference!
Phase 4 – Celebration
Celebrate their achievements with an end of programme celebration event, complete with certificate signed by the Prime Minister.
NCS opens up a world of opportunities, giving you exclusive access to work placements, volunteering and events.
About NCS
At a time of huge political uncertainty, where division is more evident than togetherness, NCS is a powerful tool to ensure the next generation see more in their similarities than differences.
- Puts young people through a series of challenging activities to take them out of their comfort zones and develop their strength of character
- Provides a progressive journey that hands over more responsibility to young people as the programme progresses and develops leadership skills necessary to succeed in the workplace
- Enables young people to connect with their communities through social action.
To date:Â
- Almost 400,000 young people have taken part
- More than seven million hours of community action have been completed
- For every £1 spent, NCS’  2016 summer programme delivered between £1.15 and £2.42 of benefits back to society
There are still places available for Year 11s to take part in this once in a lifetime opportunity this summer. To sign up now, go to the NCS website.
Would you and your teen consider signing up to the NCS programme?

Such a great idea to keep teens busy and active as they are at an age where they get bored so quickly. These are all life skills as well so it will help them in the future.

I think this is such a great idea and definitely great value too. I’m sure it could also go some way to helping them decide which direction they might want to go in terms of college or later university. I would have loved to have attended something like this at that age!
