How to have a festive family Christmas abroad

Being abroad for Christmas is an incredible adventure but it can be unsettling, especially for small children who are used to the habits of home. Make it festive to ensure it’s a happy holiday the family will never forget.

Bring decorations

Whether you’re staying in private self-catered accommodation or a room in a hotel, you can create a home away from home with the right decorations. Go big with festive favourites such as strings of Christmas lights for the windows, traditional ornaments and even a miniature or inflatable tree. If you have space in your luggage, bring cosy comforts like throws too.

If your children – and you! – enjoy being creative, pack some arts and crafts supplies and make your decorations such as paperchains. You could also craft some cards to give to one another.

Pack presents

Christmas isn’t about the presents – but we all enjoy opening them on the 25th! Pack your gifts and a stocking to store them in to continue the magical myth of Santa Claus. You don’t have to bring everything, especially heavy or valuable items, but having a couple of things to unwrap will help you mark the day.

Plan the day

Decide ahead of time how you want to spend Christmas Day itself. You could leave it free and relax together with fun family-friendly activities like board games or plan an exciting experience for a festive celebration you’ll never forget!

Bear in mind the restrictions that could be in place on the day, especially if you’re in a country that celebrates Christmas. Just as in the UK, many nations shut down shops and attractions.

Ensure the day itself is a happy one by designing an itinerary that drives excitement in the run-up to the 25th. In wintery destinations make the most of available snow sports like dog sledging and ice skating to set the mood. Many northern European countries have impressive Christmas markets with mouthwatering traditional food and themed attractions such as grottos.

In hot-weather destinations, commit to doing something different that will still ensure thrills! You could tour a national park in search of exotic wildlife or indulge in exhilarating water sports by the beach. In cities, take advantage of the world-class museums and events, great restaurants and amazing theatre performances.

Speak to family

Let’s face it: wherever you are in the world, Christmas makes you think of family. Make sure you take time to speak to them on the phone or via video call so you can pass on your good wishes and let them know you’re with them in spirit. This will make everyone feel more normal despite not being together in person.
