Review: Heathers’ The Musical Tour

If you have been following my blog recently, you will know we have had a busy summer of seeing musicals, taking full advantage of the “kids go free” offer.

One musical that Eliza had been desperate to see was Heathers The Musical, which we didn’t think was on, but a chance tweet saw that it was on tour and heading to King’s Theatre, Portsmouth.

Eliza adores musicals, she wore pink to see Mean Girls, but for Heathers she dressed as her favourite character, Veronica, and I have never seen her as excited to see a musical as she was this.

Heathers

Based on the black comedy cult classic of the same name, Heathers’ follows high school senior, Veronica Sawyer, a bright girl who longs to be cool who finds her way into the most powerful clique at school – The Heathers, until JD turns up, the mysterious teen rebel who teaches her that it might kill to be a nobody, but it is murder being a somebody.

Jenna Innes is spectacular as Veronica and Keelan McAuley as JD is wonderfully psychopathic as the troubled teen.

The Heathers’ are comprised of Esme Bowdler, a recent finalist on Mamma Mia -I have a Dream, as Heather Chandler, Sedona Sky as Heather Duke and Daisy Twells as Heather McNamara. Esme nails Chandler’s comedic side, Daisy is wonderfully innocent as McNamara and Sedona looked like she loved every moment of gaining power once Heather Chandler died, but they worked best when all together in their best reds, greens and yellows.

I am familiar with the soundtrack thanks to Eliza, but never knew the story and really enjoyed watching it unfold. It is fully of catchy songs and sharp dark humour, but also contains mature themes and strong language, so wouldn’t recommend for kids under 13.

The whole cast were superb and I especially loved Ram and Kurt, the bullying, unintelligent jocks and their Dad’s, whose song, ‘My Dead Gay Son’, was an incredible Act Two opener which captured Heathers’ clever use of dark humour, lighting and costume changes, as their funeral ties and the stage became rainbows.

Heathers’ The Musical is touring until the end of November 2024, find out more here: www.heathersthemusical.com/tour
