etch on, you may start yearning for a well-deserved break. While snow might look picturesque for a day or two, the reality of slushy pavements and dwindling daylight hours can soon take its toll.

If you feel the familiar pang for sunshine and warmth, why not swap the cold for something more inviting? It’s time to leave the woolly jumpers behind and chase the sun.

Croatia: A Mediterranean Gem

Croatia is becoming an increasingly popular choice for those looking to enjoy the sun and rich history without straying too far from home. Located on the Adriatic coast, Croatia holidays offer a beautiful mix of stunning landscapes, charming old towns, and balmy Mediterranean weather.

While the country’s peak tourist season lies in the summer months, winter still provides a more peaceful experience, allowing you to explore historical sites like Dubrovnik’s Old Town or Split’s Diocletian’s Palace without the tourist crowds.

The weather is mild compared to Britain, with temperatures averaging around 10°C during the winter months. You can wander the cobbled streets, sample delicious seafood, or even hop on a ferry to one of the many nearby islands.

Malta: Sunny Shores and History

If you seek sun in the heart of the Mediterranean, Malta is an excellent choice. The nation may be small, but its history, beaches, and vibrant culture pack a punch. Winter temperatures are a comfortable 15-18°C, perfect for long walks along the coast or sightseeing.

Malta’s capital, Valletta, is a UNESCO World Heritage site that boasts magnificent Baroque architecture and a rich blend of cultures. In the quieter months, you’ll experience a more authentic side of the island, away from the summer tourist rush.

Explore the ancient fortifications or visit the island’s temples, some of the oldest free-standing structures in the world. Malta also offers fantastic local cuisine, with dishes like pastizzi and rabbit stew to fuel your adventures.

Tenerife: An Island of Eternal Spring

Tenerife in the Canary Islands is a favourite among Brits seeking year-round warmth. With an average temperature of 20°C during winter, this volcanic island boasts a climate that’s almost like a permanent spring.

The island is diverse, offering everything from black-sand beaches to the towering peaks of Mount Teide, Spain’s highest mountain.

Tenerife is well-suited for both relaxation and adventure. Whether you want to lounge in the sun or hike the dramatic landscapes, Tenerife has something for everyone.

The southern coast, with its lively resorts and pristine beaches, offers plenty of sunshine. However, if you prefer a more tranquil experience, the northern part of the island provides lush greenery, charming villages, and a slower pace of life. The relaxed vibe makes it a fantastic spot to unwind and enjoy some much-needed warmth.

Turkey: A Winter Retreat with a Rich Heritage

For a blend of culture, nature, and sunshine, Turkey is hard to beat. In winter, the weather is typically mild, with coastal areas like Antalya and Bodrum enjoying temperatures around 15°C. This is perfect for exploring the ancient ruins and experiencing the local culture without the oppressive heat of summer.

Turkey’s southern coast offers a great opportunity to visit ancient cities like Ephesus, where you can walk among the ancient ruins of the Temple of Artemis and the Library of Celsus. Beyond history, Turkey’s Mediterranean coast has beautiful beaches and an impressive culinary scene.

The warmth of the people and the richness of the country’s history make it an excellent winter escape. Whether you’re interested in exploring the bustling streets of Istanbul or relaxing on the beach, Turkey offers a wonderful mix of experiences that make it a unique destination.
