Road Trip Through Austria
Austria is an amazing location. It is beautiful, family-friendly, and there’s so much to do no matter what time of the year you go! It is a quick 2-3 hour flight from the UK, and you can easily rent a car (safer now anyways) to head off to some amazing places!
Before you go, it is incredibly helpful to learn at least some German so you know the travel basics to get around and also to show respect to the local culture. Phrases such as ‘where can I find’, ‘please’, and ‘thank you’ can go a long way during your time in Austria! By using language apps like Babbel for example, you can learn German online and pick up the basics of the language in no time. Apps can make language learning easy, effective, and convenient so it can get you more excited for your trip rather than stressing you out. Best part? You can take it with you!
As you wander through Austria, here are a few places to stop at on your road trip:
Vienna
Vienna is a beautiful city that is well worth spending some time in. It is well suited for living and visiting, as it is easy to get around, the restaurants and cafes are incredible, it is well-kept and there is plenty to do. You can see a show, visit thermal baths, visit one of the many art galleries or museums, and so much more.
Riegersburg and Gamlitz (South Styria region)
The South Styria region is unofficially known as the unofficial culinary and wine capital of Austria. If you love wine, the South Syrian Wine Road is a must. It starts in Ehrenhausen and ends in Leutschach.
Riegersburg is a gorgeous spot to visit the medieval castle and surrounding wine country. You’ll want to give yourself enough time to visit a tavern or restaurant with a view so you can take in the beautiful scenery.
As you continue on your way throughout the region, a great place to consider your central base to explore from is the city of Gamlitz. It is easy to get to surrounding areas to explore, and then come back to a beautiful place at the end of the day to enjoy your evening and prepare for your next adventure. Plus, it has the free Gamlitz Taxi Service which will take you between where you are staying and a winery, restaurant, or wine tavern so you can safely enjoy an evening out.
The Dachstein Mountains
The Dachstein Mountains are a mountain region part of the Northern Limestone Alps. Austria is well-known for its Alpine terrain, and it is a must to spend some time in the Alps while here.
Hallstatt
The village of Hallstatt is a gorgeous and charming destination. It is located on the western shore of Lake Hallstatt, with Alpine houses from the 16th century and quaint buildings lining the edge of the lake.
It feels like a village straight from a fairytale, and after spending some time in the mountains and open nature, it feels even more surreal as you take in the magic of the village.
It is easily one of the most romantic places in all of Europe.
Salzburg
Located on the border of Germany, Salzburg is one of the main cities of Austria. With the Salzach River separating the Old City and the New City, there is a lot of character and history to experience here. The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and if you love Baroque architecture you will love your time in Salzburg.
This road trip can not only be fun, but also very educational! There is incredible history and a rich culture in Austria, so take your time exploring and really getting to know the way of the locals here. Just make sure to pack enough essentials and masks!
